グラマーレッスンの「Defining Clause」と「Non-defining Clause」、もう一度復習!

・The postman, realised I was on holiday. You had sent me a letter. The postman left it next door.
  - The postman, who realised I was on holiday, left a letter that you had sent me next door.

・The students who passed all the exam were pleased to begin their holidays.
  The students, who passed all the exam, were pleased to begin their holidays.
  - The first sentence means that only the students who passed all exams were pleased to begin their holiday and other’s didn’t.
    The second means that all the students passed all the exams and please to begin their holiday.

・The workers who didn’t come to work lost their jobs.
  The workers, who didn’t come to work, lost their jobs.
  - The first sentence means that only the workers who didn’t come to work lost their jobs and others didn’t.
    The second sentence means that all the workers lost their jobs and they didn’t come to work.

・I read two books about Brazil which were very interesting.
I read two books about Brazil, which were very interesting.
- The first sentence means that only I read two books about Brazil were very interesting.
   The second means that I read only two books about Brazil were very interesting.

・The food which was placed in the broken fridge went bad.
  The food, which was placed in the broken fridge, went bad.
  - The first sentence means that only the food was placed in the broken fridge went bad but others didn’t.
  - The second means that all the food was placed in the broken fridge.

Defining relative clauses are essential in the sentence. They cannot omited.
Non-defining relative clauses are not essential in the sentence. They can be omitted.
